GoldieBlox toy review Family Product Reviews | Barbara Bryan | 26 September 2014

GoldieBlox review

Encourage your daughter to develop a love of maths and science creativity.....with GoldieBlox!

This week Brooke, 9 and Samantha, 7 took the GoldieBlox range of building toys for a test run....

GoldieBlox is a very clever toy concept - it allows girls to step beyond the simple pink princess toy range, and shows them a world of possibilities that they can explore and create all by themselves - either by design, or adventure!

The Goldie Blox toy kits mix reading and problem-solving with science and engineering - on a kid-level, of course! The star of the GoldieBlox series, GoldieBlox, is a girl inventor extraordinaire - and so an inspiring role-model for young girls! The GoldiBlox pack contains a colourful story book that tells a different GoldiBlox adventure, and includes all the construction toy components and toys needed to build the actual project from the story.

GoldieBlox at the craft table....
Brooke & Samantha get building with GoldieBlox

As the GoldieBlox story unfolds, the young reader is guided along the way so that they can actually build the project of that particular story, one piece at a time. This step-by-step approach helps to build the child's confidence in constructing the toy project as they go along.

With the toy set Brooke and Samantha were reviewing - GoldieBlox and the Parade Float - the construction project was a colourful parade float that fit together with simple pieces - the focus being on teaching the mechanics of working wheels and axles. The finishing touches to the completed float were three cute little character toys from the story, and a ribbon to pull it all along with. So in the end, the girls has a cute rolling toy, and a working knowledge of how wheels and axles worked!

The great thing about GoldieBlox toys is that it shows girls that engineering is not a dirty word - that they are more than capable of building their own scientific, mathematical masterpiece. Putting together a working project with a fun end-result, and building their construction confidence along the way. And there is not just one GoldieBlox story toy variation possibility, but as many as their imagination allows! The construction pieces can be reassembled in many different ways - some different toy constructions are suggested, but there are numerous possibilities, enabling girls to experiment for different results.

Samantha adds the finishing touches to their GoldieBlox parade float....

So - Samantha and Brooke's verdict on GoldieBlox? Both girls loved building and then playing with the GoldieBlox toy construction set - you could see their sense of accomplishment shining through with their completed project, and again later as they produced toy after toy variation on the original parade float as their confidence grew - we can build and invent, mum!

GoldieBlox is a great any-time-gift, birthday present or Christmas toy selection for any young girl with an inquisitive mind! GoldieBlox available from Australian Geographic, Kidstuff, Myer, Target, Toys"R"Us, Toyworld, and all good toy retailers.

What does it mean to be a single mum?Of course, the

are the most important thing in a single mum's life. Kids are the focus and always have been. But along with the children, there are other matters that can confuse a single mum's life.

plays a big part of a single mother's life, mainly because this is where a large percentage of single mums get their finances from. Centrelink are the source from where the

single mother pension

, or as it is otherwise known, the single parent payment comes from. The single mother pension is a subsistence amount, but just the same, it is money to live on, and so it is important, no matter if it is called single parent payment, single mother pension or whatever Centrelink welfare classes it at the time

Often, single mums come out of a

or defacto relationship only to find that their troubles have just begun, and find that their first step leads them towards Family Law - it's time to engage a lawyer.
There are more than just Centrelink finance problems to worry about, as mentioned before, but also

child custody

issues. Child custody is something that hits right at the heart of

single mums

. If a single mother's ex husband or ex partner has been a domestic violence perpetrator, the mum may be greatly worried about child custody. They worry that their kids won't be safe with their spouse, who has already proven to be abusive because they caused

domestic violence

, which resulted in a divorce or separation.

Even so,

Family Court

will often still order a form of child custody named

Shared Parenting

. Shared Parenting is a form of child custody division of time or parental responsibility between the parents. Mother's often look for a good divorce lawyer to try to avoid share parenting with an abusive ex-spouse after divorce, however in many cases Shared Parenting is still the outcome after the divorce, no matter how good the divorce lawyers have been. They will often settle for visitation at a contact centre or access centre where fathers or mothers are supervised during child custody access.
