The Adventure Birthday Party by Barbara Bryan

Australian single mum blogger Barbara Bryan of the multi-award-winning Singlemum and Let’s go Mum websites has released a children’s story book especially suited for Australian single mum families.

A single mum family bedtime book

The Adventure Birthday Party is a children’s book written by author and mumpreneur Barbara Bryan – single mum, and founder of Singlemum.com.au.

Illustrated by Alina Besserman, this gorgeous easy-to-read kid’s story book makes a wonderful bedtime story book for single mum families- because it features an Australian single mum family!

Targeted towards early readers aged 3-7 years, The Adventure Birthday Party encourages children to read by engaging their interest in rhythmic, exciting text. After all, all kids love reading about birthday parties – and counting down to their own special day!

Australian backyard birthday party fun

It’s Brooke and Sam’s Birthday!

Barbara describes her new children’s book as an imaginative romp through a home-made birthday party.

The birthday party is held in what could be anyone’s Aussie back garden, and so entirely relatable to Aussie single parent families – but this doesn’t mean the party isn’t packed full of fun too!

Kids will love this colourful, fun birthday party adventure- especially because the family is just like their own, with mum being the only parent, running it all.

Throughout the story there are no continual two-parent or Dad references. This empowers single parent family kids to feel “normal”, and not somehow missing out, or questioning why Mum and Dad aren’t together – or have an active Dad in their lives.

Mum is the sole parent in this story – and that’s not just okay – it’s awesome!

Barbara said the ideas and inspiration for the content of this new children’s book came from the many themed birthday parties she has thrown at home as a single mummy for her own two children Brooke and Samantha.

Barbara’s daughters Brooke and Samantha also happen to be the two main characters that the book is based around!

This is a super-cute tale that should be on the book shelf of all Aussie single mum families.

Often, parents simply don’t know where to start when trying to introduce the subject of self-protection from sexual abuse to their children. We all want our kids to be safe – but how should we teach them about this scary subject? Parents can find themselves mistakenly avoiding the issue, simply because they don’t know how to handle it – and this is where Everyone’s Got a Bottom, by Queensland author Tess Rowley, comes in.

Not just a children’s book, Everyone’s Got a Bottom acts as a teaching aid on two distinct levels. First, with a friendly children’s picture-book story that gently ventures into the topic of personal protection. The story is followed by an excellent parent reference guide at the back that assists parents and carer givers on how to effectively educate their children about their bodies – and how to keep them safe.

A big, bright, colourful book

A big, bright, colourful book, children are immediately drawn to the gorgeous illustrations (by the talented artist Jodi Edwards), as well as the engaging story about siblings Ben, Jack and Emma, who are learning all about their bodies.

Proper anatomical body names are used throughout the story, and although this can sometimes be a little confronting for parents, it enables children to identify which areas of their bodies are actually their “private parts” (which includes their mouths).Everyone’s Got a Bottom sets about equipping children with a solid set of rules about touching – that the wrong kind of touching is not okay. It gives them simple courses of action that they can apply to a range of situations

Children are taught that they shouldn’t agree to keep secrets about the wrong kind of touching, and to tell a trusted adult – all done on a level that young children can identify with and understand.

Comprehensive Resource Section

The last two pages of the book provide a comprehensive resource section for parents and care givers, explaining in detail the facts of child sexual abuse. It is explained that sex-offenders are most often known to the child, rather than it being a case of “stranger danger”, and expansively covers different types of abuse – and how to help prevent it. There is a list of indicators, or warning signs, to help parents identify if their child may be experiencing sexually abuse, and gives guidance on how to handle it if a child does tell you that they are being abused.

This excellent children’s publication is a collaboration of Family Planning Queensland, writer Tess Rowley, illustrator Jodi Edwards and experts from the early childhood and child protection sectors, so the information is given comes from a source that you know you can trust.

Everyone’s Got a Bottom helps parents and carers to teach their kids how to safe-guard their own bodies, and as such, is a valuable addition to any children’s book collection.

Everyone’s Got a Bottom is available from Booktopia here .

Helping children to make smart choices and stay safe

Smart Parenting for Safer Kids by Professor Freda Briggs is a practical guide for parents on how to keep their children safe from the dangers of modern society. Written by Professor Freda Briggs AO, Australia’s foremost expert in child protection, the book draws on her lifetime of experience to educate parents on how to deal with issues such as bullying, sexual abuse and developing children’s safety skills.

Combining academic research and first-hand experience, the book aims to address common issues prevalent in modern day parenting. It includes real-world examples and information on how to identify if children have been involved in harmful situations such as bullying or physical abuse; effective techniques for handling and resolving such situations; and the psychological effects such situations may have on children. Practical exercises featuring role play and hypothetical scenarios also mean parents are still able to take a hands-on approach to working through such issues with their children.

On top of that, the book’s wide scope ensures parents with children of all ages will receive advice on every stage of child development, from laying the foundations for a happy, healthy child to teaching children safety skills for dangerous situations and protecting them in cyberspace.

Smart Parenting for Safer Kids is a comprehensive, thought-provoking read which not only sheds light on some of the most difficult challenges parents will encounter when raising their children, but also provides a myriad of creative and practical solutions to resolving such difficulties.

“We teach children that goodness involves obedience to adults. Never say, ‘be good and do what you are told’ when you leave children with other people. Children will obey an abusive child-minder even when they know what is happening is wrong. They fear that disobedience will result in the minder and parents being angry and they risk losing their parents’ affection.”

“Smart Parenting for Safer Kids” is available online from Booktopia

Smart Parenting is priced at $35.00, including postage.

This simple yet effective children’s self-help book is the brainchild of Australians Danielle Jaku-Greenfield and Nicky McWilliam, Registered Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners and co-founders of Sydney Mediation Partnership, with the first book in the series being written by Danielle.

In the course of her work, Danielle recognised that there was a real need for a book written from a child’s perspective to help introduce newly-separated children to shared parenting.

Parents can even pick up a tip or two when reading this book to their child, with gentle reminders to be cooperative with their ex-partner, and ensure that the children are given their own sense of belonging and security no matter where they are living. With charming illustrations by Lindi Greenfield that the kids can even colour in, this book leads children from the upset of their former unhappy family life to a better place where everyone is more settled and things are still okay – even if they are very different.
