New South Wales (NSW)
The Student Assistance Scheme (SAS) was removed in 2014 – any remaining funding for eligible New South Wales families of primary and secondary students attending NSW government schools for school related expenses is listed on this government website page. A number of scholarships, grants and allowances are available to assist students with their education

New South Wales (NSW) – Isolated Families Schemes (LAFHA & BSIS)
There are also currently two schemes to assist with schooling costs for isolated New South Wales families:
Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA) – a NSW Government allowance supporting access to secondary education for isolated students
Boarding Scholarship for Isolated Students (BSIS) – for attending high school.

Victoria (VIC) – Education Maintenance Allowance
A Victorian Government scheme, the Education Maintenance Allowance was withdrawn in 2014. The School Start Bonus (SSB) was discontinued in 2012.

Victoria (VIC) – Student Scholarships

The scholarships are offered to primary, secondary and tertiary students and range in value from $300 to $2500. They are generally awarded to students who:

  • demonstrate academic achievement
  • demonstrate participation in their school and local community
  • are in financial need (determined by the parents/guardians being in receipt of a Health Care Card, a Low Income Health Care Card or a Pensioner Concession Card (card reference number required) or the students themselves receiving the Youth Allowance)

However there are scholarships that are not based on the above criteria, especially scholarships connected to the Police Force and the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, Locomotive Division.

South Australia

South Australia (SA) – School funding
The South Australian Government School Card Scheme provides financial assistance towards the educational expenses incurred by South Australian families at government and non-government schools and who meet the eligibility criteria. Full-time students from low income families who are in financial need may be eligible to receive assistance to enable them to pay school fees, obtain books and materials and attend camps and excursions. There are also other funding resources such as travel concessions and scholarships listed on their website here

Queensland (QLD) – School student grants and allowances
The Queensland Government offers grants and funding, including a Textbook and Resource Allowance which provides assistance to parents of secondary school age Queensland students attending state and approved non-state schools to contribute towards the cost of textbooks and learning resources and the Living Away from Home Allowances Scheme (LAFHAS).

The Queensland Government funds the School Transport Assistance Scheme to help students travel to and from school if their access to education facilities is impeded by distance, disability, financial disadvantage or if the students are from areas designated as drought-declared.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) – Secondary Bursary Scheme
The ACT Government provides financial assistance to support families with education expenses through the Secondary Bursary Scheme for Australian Capital Territory students in years 7-10 and the Student Support Fund programs.

Tasmania (TAS) – Student Assistance Scheme (STAS)
The Tasmanian Government Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) for low-income Tasmanian families provides help towards the cost of school levies. It is available for full-time students attending a government or registered non-government school. Eligibility depends on a parent/guardian income test or independent student income test for all applicants.

Tasmania (TAS) – Spectacles Assistance Scheme (STAS)
Tasmanian Government Spectacles Assistance Scheme provides financial assistance towards the purchase of spectacles from participating optometrists for Tasmanian students in low-income families. Students must be attending a government or registered non-government school, or be in a registered home education situation.
