Our story about proposed changes to Family Tax Benefits has really hit a nerve, both with parents and among the politicians.
Since our story was published two days ago, Labor’s Families and Payments spokesperson Jenny Macklin has been hit with a flood of emails and phone calls from parents worried about losing Family Tax Benefit Part B.
Other media outlets have suggested that Family Tax Benefit Part B will be axed for families with school aged children from 1 July 2015. We linked to a report in The Australian suggesting Labor is considering its position.
The Abbott government has been trying to axe FTB Part B since the 2014 budget, but the legislation has been held up in the senate. The government needs Labor’s support for this to pass.
Jenny Macklin has now said Labor would not support cuts to the FTB Jenny Macklin’s office has contacted Singlemum.com.au to say Labor is definitely opposed to the government’s plan, which, says Macklin, would cost some families $6,000 per year:
“The Government wants to cut Family Tax Benefit Part B to those families who have a child once the youngest child turns six,” said Macklin.
“We are not going to support that.”
Jenny Macklin said Labor would not support cuts to Family Tax Benefits to pay for more generous child care benefits:
“We are not going to support robbing Peter to pay Paul,” said Ms Macklin “That is just very short-sighted.
