Seeking single mums that chose to go it alone

The Australian Women’s Weekly, Australia’s biggest-selling magazine, is looking for a single mum who decided to have a child on her own.

Ideally, the single mother we’re looking for decided that she was able to provide a good, stable environment for her child without the need for a husband or partner and then found a way to make goal that a reality.

The single mum should be prepared to be interviewed and photographed for the story with her child/extended family and, of course, must be identified.

10 years ago, a family unit meant a dad, a mum and a child. But in the past few years we as a society have matured. Women in their 30s and 40s do not want a relationship only for the sake of having babies. Because they have realised they can still be loving mothers without fathers.

If you are such a single mum or a same sex couple – who have chosen to use sperm donors to get pregnant, we would love to know more about your situation. What are the challenges you face but why you think this is the best decision you ever made?

Although I was unable to respond to everyone personally I am grateful to all the mums (and dad) who took time to share their stories with me.

The program will air this Sunday morning on ABC Radio National after the 9am news. And will be audiostreamed and podcast. The transcript will be available by Tuesday afternoon.

Here’s a little blurb about the program.

Legislation before the Senate now may take some of the heat out of tragic confusion over shared, or “equal time parenting”, and the role of violence in Family Law decision making. Research shows children of high conflict families, forced into equal time, are suffering. Reporter Brendan King. And here’s the link.

The story is about the health of single mothers, the effect that the stresses and strains of single parenting can have on health and the need for single mothers to take time to focus on their well-being as well as that of their children

Christmas Day TV program on Channel 9

We are looking for single mother families to receive a FREE gourmet Christmas lunch prepared by 5 star gourmet Chef, Zigi Ozeri.

The families will be featured on a Channel 9 Christmas Day TV program called ‘My Christmas’ – showing how people will have a better Christmas because of the work of great organisations and good samaritans.

We have an opening for 12 single mother families receive the free lunch and be a part of the program.

You will be seen on the program (no names will be shown) and we will be looking to film you and your children enjoying a great Christmas lunch thanks to Zigi.

We will also ask you:

• ‘what have you enjoyed about today?’
• ‘how will this experience help you to have a better Christmas?’

and

• ‘how will your children benefit from a free lunch like this (focusing on the food and community spirit in the room)?’

To help us with the overall balance of the program, ideally the children seen in the program will be aged 10 years and below.

Date: THIS SUNDAY, 1 December, 2012
Location: 86 Abercrombie St Chippendale (Sydney)
Start Time: 12pm for a 12.30pm sit down
End Time: about 2.30pm

OurSay.org, an online platform that connects citizens with people in power, is looking for 20-25 parents to attend upcoming 1-2 hour workshops to be held in Sydney and Melbourne.

These workshops are designed to prepare interested parents in online campaigning for a forum being run by OurSay and FaHCSIA (Department of Families, Housing, Community Services & Indigenous Australians).

The forum allows everyday Australians to post and vote for questions that will be answered by the Hon. Jenny Macklin, Minister for Families. On the back of the incoming School Kids Bonus, Minister Macklin is using the OurSay platform to hear your ideas & concerns about how FaHCSIA can best support families in the future.

The Workshops are to be held on:

• Melbourne – 24th November
• Sydney – 25th November
