How to break out of your mummy style rut!

Here are my top tips to help you
Mum life is hard! We are stuck managing the least glamorous parts of life, with the added hassle of a whole new body to navigate. Droopy boobs, saggy butts and stomach that could easily be mistaken for bread dough. These changes to our lifestyle and body can have us feeling less than fabulous and often lead to a mum-shaped style rut.
Here are my top tips to help you break out of your style rut:
- Take it Slow
Don’t rush into your new style! You don’t have to become Coco Chanel overnight. Taking small incremental steps towards a more stylish wardrobe means you will make lasting change. Many a mum has suffered BIG regret after blowing big bucks on a “whole new look” that doesn’t suit their lifestyle. Which leads me onto the next point…
- Look at your lifestyle
Buy items that will suit your lifestyleIt’s easy to waste money on shiny, new items when you are in a shopping centre vortex. These are the things that hang with tags on for months or years waiting to be worn. The reason you’re not wearing them? They don’t suit your lifestyle. Spend your money on the items you need every day!
- Buy Less
Spend less money buying unnecessary thingsYou know that saying “You can’t see the forest for the trees.” Sometimes you just can’t see the treasures in your own wardrobe because they are hidden under all those trend items you pick up on the cheap. Setting limits around your shopping can help tame the shopping craving and keeping a list on your phone of things you really need will help you avoid buying another unnecessary or duplicate item.
- Throw ’em away!
Throw away your old clothesYou know what they are! Those really comfy pants/jeans/shorts that you just can’t part with but would be so embarrassed to be caught wearing by your friend, frienemy or ex-boyfriend. If its as comfy as your pyjamas and as faded as your granny’s undies you MUST, I repeat, MUST get rid of it! The second option here is to make this item your new Pyjamas. It can never leave the house again. Got it?
- Stalk!
Stalk fashionistas online for style inspiration! The best way to up your style ante is to get stalking. Find a fabulous fashionista on Instagram, follow a style board on Pinterest or simply skim the mags at the checkout for some fresh inspiration. If we don’t move with the times then we cement ourselves firmly in rut-town and nothing good ever comes from being stuck in a rut.
Creating a stylish look isn’t easy. It takes time. Be gentle with yourself as you step out of your trackies and into the brave new stylish world. Enjoy and embrace your body for all that it has done for you and then reward it by dressing it stylishly each day. Go on….show the world you care!
