Children's construction of meaningful relationships with parents post-separation

*OPEN* Edith Cowan University | April 2011 – June 2011 (possible extension)

Hi Mums,

My name is Jessica Groves and I am a researcher at Edith Cowan University in WA. I am looking for teenagers (13-17 year olds) to take part in a project called ‘Children’s construction of meaningful relationships with parents post-separation’.

Like the title suggests, we want to talk to teens about how they manage their relationships with their parents after family separation and we’re keen to talk to teens in a diverse range of situations, such as different care or living arrangements, males/females etc.

This can be an emotional topic, especially if separation is recent, but we are careful to take a friendly and compassionate approach and no-one is ever asked to discuss things beyond what they are confortable with. We’re happy to arrange an interview (30-60 mins) at a time and place that suits participants and we would need parents’ consent (at least the primary carer) as well.

The research can help shed more light on how children deal with separation and whether current family Law and policy fully captures the key issue of ‘child’s best interest’.

If you are interested in your child/ren participating in this project or for more information, please contact Karine Hamilton or Jessica Groves on 63045418 or 63042709 or via email k.hamilton@ecu.edu.au or j.groves@ecu.edu.au

The Human Research Ethics Committee has approved this research. All information will be treated as confidential and no names or identifying information will be used to ensure privacy. Your participation is entirely voluntary and you may withdraw from the study at any time. If you are interested in speaking to someone independent of this study please contact the University Research Ethics Officer on (08) 6304 2170 or email on research.ethics@ecu.edu.au.

Kind regards,

Jessica Groves and Dr Karine Hamilton
